St. Philip's Episcopal
An Interview with Fr. Clay

How long have you been a priest? At what other churches have you pastored?

I was ordained a deacon in 1995 and a Priest in January of 1996. For six years I served at Christ Church in Plano before planting St. Philip's. Prior to that I have been part of churches in Phoenix, South Carolina and Pittsburgh.

Have you always been a church type?

Not all my life. I was born in Missouri and grew up going to a Lutheran church nearby. We were there almost every time it opened but it never seemed to connect with me. By the time I had graduated from high school I decided that the Church was irrelevant. In 1984 I finished college with an Electrical Engineering degree and went to work in Phoenix, Arizona with Intel Corporation. While there I began and finished my MBA at Arizona State University. I'd say that throughout my twenties I didn't do Church or God stuff.

How/When did you become a Christian?

During those years I began to rethink "GOD" and church stuff. My wife had found a new church startup that was alive and seemed relevant. We began to go - she because she loved it and I to humor her. In 1988 I was asked to go to a youth summer camp. It was at that camp with all those kids that I became convinced that God was real. Now I tell people that one day in August I became a Christian.

How did becoming a Christian change your life?

After I became a Christian my priorities and my focus changed. I immediately came back and started a youth group in this little church plant. Then I found a great small group and discovered a gift for teaching. I enjoyed my work at Intel but after a few years I realized that I was having more fun doing ministry than I was doing marketing. In 1992 my church agreed that I was called to the Priesthood and so I moved my family to Pittsburgh for three years of seminary. I was ordained in 1995 and since then I've been watching God grow His church and having the time of my life.

Are you married? Children?

My wife, Jill, and I have been married for 24 years. She is an active part of the ministry and sometimes I think she's a better church planter than I am. We also have three children. Jenny is 19, John is 17 and Joshua is 16. We moved to Frisco in May of 2002. Right now the kids are upstairs playing video games, reading comics, arguing with each other, complaining about school and doing all the things that ordinary Priest's kids do best.
