St. Philip's Episcopal
Places to Serve

Below, you will find information about every ministry offered here at St. Philip's; what goes on in each ministry and who to contact in regards to that ministry. Ministries are grouped in five categories: Administrative, Evangelism & Outreach, Fellowship and Caring, Teaching & Shepherding, and Worship.

This information is meant to encourage you in finding a ministry to participate in. Scripture tells us that God has given all believers special gifts and that, when we use those gifts, the whole body of Christ is built up and we ourselves are blessed. Everyone is encouraged to join a ministry which will use their gifts in ways that are comfortable, and perhaps, in ways that are a bit challenging.

May God Bless you as you seek and serve Him.

Ministry of Administration

Ministries under this heading all have to do with making sure that the "business" aspects of the church run smoothly. The gifts used in this ministry include developing, organizing, assisting, and coordinating tasks and/or people.

Communications

How we communicate information about St. Philip's, both within and without, is extremely important. Computers are used in almost every aspect of this ministry. Graphic design, text formatting, web site design and management, and press releases all start here. If you are gifted and have experience in any of these areas, the Communications Ministry would love to hear from you.

Copy and Production

Every week our Sunday Bulletin needs to be copied and prepared for services. We send out the INTOUCH to members who cannot attend a Sunday service. This will also need to be copied and prepared for mailing. We need some volunteers who have a couple of hours a week to devote to this ministry.

- 214-387-4700 ext. 113

Office Volunteers

Offering blocks of time on a weekly or event specific basis, people help our Ministry Center to run smoothly and efficiently. Jobs range from answering the telephones to entering data in the computer, and from making copies to organizing our resource library.

- 214-387-4700 ext. 115

Financial and Technical Assistance

People who volunteer for this ministry use their existing skills for bookkeeping, accounting, and various WORD and Microsoft program software tasks. ACS (Automated Church System) experience would also be a valued asset.

- 214-387-4700 ext. 111

Housekeeping

Our buildings need cleaning just like everything else! People who volunteer in this ministry offer their valuable time and skill to do just that. Everything is on the "light" side of housekeeping. We do have a cleaning service come in once a week but with all the use both buildings receive, mid-week "sprucing" is a help!

- 214-387-4700 ext. 111

Facilities Fix It Folks

It may be new but there are a lot of things that need to be modified or installed or even fixed. We need folks able to handle specific tasks as they arise and help keep these buildings in repair.

Landscaping and Gardening

This is our Church home. And we are dependent on those gifted with a green thumb and artistic eye to transform these grounds into gardens alive with color and warmth. If you like to work in the garden, please join this team. We also need teams that can rotate mowing, watering, trimming and other landscaping maintenance needs.

Ministry of Evangelism and Outreach

These ministries use many of the same gifts as those in the ministry of Caring. However, the Ministries of Evangelism and Outreach bear the special emphasis of bringing the Good News of Jesus Christ to our community and world. Often strong gifts of faith, mercy and Leadership and Shepherding shine as structured projects are completed.

Local outreach opportunities include: Adopt-a-Shelf, our Seniors Ministry, Make a Difference Day, Thanksgiving Boxes, the Angel Tree, North Texas Food Bank, the Fill the Truck Food Drive, the Forrest Outreach Foundation, Habitat for Humanity and the Grocery Store Rewards Program. Our congregation is also very active in global missions. We currently send teams to Peru, India, Juarez and Belize in our efforts to impact the world for Christ.

Stock a Shelf

Frisco Family Services Food Pantry meets the needs of local families. Families of St. Philip's help by adopting a shelf in the pantry for one week, stocking it with paper goods or nonperishable food items. This is a wonderful ministry for a family to do together!

- 469-287-2598

Angel Tree Project

At Christmas every year, we ask members of our congregation to adopt "angels" that contain gifts for children in our area that otherwise would not receive a gift at Christmas. Frisco Family Services gathers the gifts and distributes them to the parents who made the request, complete with wrapping paper and ribbon. This is a great way to share the love of Christ in honor of His birth.

Apple Tree Project

The Apple Tree program helps kids in our community get ready to go back to schoo. In conjunction with Frisco Family Services, we provide school supplies as well as school clothing items to children in need. During the month of July, there is an "Apple Tree" with apples listing supplies and/or clothing that are needed. Participants simply pick an apple, purchase the supplies, and return them to the church.

Fill the Truck Food Drive

Once a year, St. Philip's sponsors a food drive to help bolster the amount of food at the Frisco Family Services Food Pantry. This helps get the Pantry through what are typically lean summer months, and ensure that the Food Pantry is able to meet the needs of the families in our area without interruption.

- 972-668-1805

Forrest Outreach

Kim Nimon started this Non-profit organization to help "break the cycle of poverty" in Collin County and the world. Various opportunities exist to participate. Check out their web sight, www.breakthecycle.net, for detailed information or call:

Grocery Store Rewards Program

Many of you are familiar with the reward card programs at our local grocery stores, but some of you may not know that the grocery stores will also make a contribution to the local charity of your choice, if you link your reward number to the number of that charity. St. Philip's has set up numbers with Kroger's, Tom Thumb and Albertson's. If you would like more information on how to link your reward card to St. Philip's, please contact Geoffrey Davis or see the display at the back of our worship space.

Make a Difference Day

On the third Saturday in October each year, St. Philip's offers multiple ways for folks of all ages to serve in Frisco and beyond. Past activities have included making gift bags for the residents of our local nursing homes, which is particularly fun for younger children and their families. We also gather a group of folks to go potato gleaning in east Texas. All of the potatoes gleaned from the field go to local food pantries for families in need . Our youth have a great time participating in this event. We also send a team to help with light construction through our Handyman Ministry. If you are interested in a one-day opportunity to serve, this would be a great event for you and your family.

- 214-543-1563

Mission Teams

St. Philip's has sent teams of people to Peru, Mexico, India, and Belize. Teams are formed approximately four months before a scheduled trip. Team preparation includes attendance at six Team Formation Meetings, inviting prayer and financial partners, and participating in some areas of "in country" readiness. Teams formulate plans based on current needs of the people we are going to serve. Some teams are more construction based, while others may focus on meeting the needs of children, but all teams go to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. To find out about current mission trips scheduled you can call our Missions Coordinator listed below, go to the missions page of this website, or read information in the Sunday worship bulletins.

North Texas Food Bank

This organization distributes food to local food pantries. Our job as volunteers is to break up large palates of items into smaller containers that can be picked up by individuals and organizations in our area. For every volunteer hour we give, extra food is given to the Frisco Family Services Food Pantry.

- 214-387-4700 ext. 124/125

Seniors Ministry

This group of caring people visits the residents of Victoria Gardens Nursing Home and the Frisco Senior Living Center in Frisco. Activities at both facilities include monthly Bingo, gift bags on Make a Difference Day, and special Christmas treats. For Victoria Gardens, we also sponsor manicures for the residents, ice cream socials, and Kid's Praise Choir Performances. For bingo, please keep in mind that some of the residents have trouble hearing, so it is often best that younger children not serve at these particular events. However, we include special events during the year where children can participate, and the residents really enjoy their presence.

- 972-334-9867

Thanksgiving Boxes

St. Philip's works with Frisco Family Services to gather boxes that contain all of the ingredients necessary for an entire thanksgiving meal for a local family in need, so that they might be able to gather around their family table and give thanks to God as we do at ours.

Ministry of Fellowship and Caring

"Church" isn't just Sunday morning. In fact, "Church" is really the people of God. Fellowship and Care Ministries exist to extend love, support and, of course, care, to people who need it. This area also encompasses ministries that provide and encourage opportunities for relationships to be strengthened. Gifts used throughout these ministries include mercy, compassion, hospitality, giving and faith.

Care and Hospitality Team

This group of loving individuals provides practical, emotional and spiritual support to individuals or families with short-term needs for meals. Whether you have a loved one in the hospital for surgery, or you have just brought your new baby home, this team can provide meals until your need has passed.

- 972-335-4635

Congregational Events

St. Philip's has many congregational fellowship events throughout the year; picnics, hayrides, receptions, game nights, baseball games and more. Putting these events on takes some planning. This group of people takes on the challenge with joy!

- 972-731-5078

Lay Eucharistic Visitors

When someone is unable to come to church, a licensed Lay Eucharistic Visitor will bring the church to that person. Whether in the hospital, a nursing home, or a private home, the Lay Eucharistic Visitors bring Holy Communion to anyone who requests it. Training is required by the Dioceses and provided by St. Philip's. Please call the Main Office for information about the next scheduled training opportunity.

Men's Ministry Core Team

The St. Philip's Men's ministry provides planned opportunities for "boys to be boys" and men to grow in faith and impact the world for Christ. Small Group Ministry

St. Philips currently has ten small groups. These different groups offer wonderful opportunities for people to grow in their personal relationship and their faith.

Groups meet at differing intervals, once a month to once a week. Some groups involve children while others are specifically for people without children. Men's groups, Women's groups, Youth Groups, you name it, I think we've got it. Please call one of the Small Group Coaches listed below to find a group to join or to start a group of your own.

Women's Ministry

St. Philip's has a wonderful, vibrant and welcoming Women's Ministry Program. Programs throughout the week are designed to accommodate both working gals and stay home moms, and women of any age. A variety of Bible studies are offered and, no matter which you choose, you'll find open hearts and encouragement for your own faith journey. The Women's Ministry also offers two retreats each year, again specifically to accommodate as many schedules as possible. Throughout the year are planned fellowship events just to let your hair down and have some fun! Together with other women you'll enjoy all these opportunities to grow in faith and impact the world for Christ. Come and See!

Ministry of Teaching & Shepherding

Each of us is in the process of growing in our knowledge and faith of God. Yet, some of those amongst us also have been given the gifts of teaching, communication, and discipleship. Ministries in this area reach out to people of all ages, providing structure for learning, encouragement for learning, and the communicating of knowledge

Adult Education

At St. Philip's we believe that learning is an essential part of growing faith. We offer an incredible variety of classes for adults. If you have the gift of teaching and believe you have something to offer our congregation in this area please contact

- 214-387-4700 ext. 112

Early Childhood Ministry Program

In our nursery we offer professional and loving care for our littlest (newborn to 4 years) members and visitors. Parents receive a pager so that if they are needed they can be easily contacted. Activities, music, and basic Bible introduction, and personal attention all combine to give children thorough and wonderful care.

- 214-387-4700 ext. 124/125

Kid's Club

At both our services we offer a fun filled and content packed program for our Kindergarten through 5th graders called Kid's Club. With energetic teaching, Bible focused learning, creative crafts, and personal attention this is exactly where the kids want to be. They may just have a thing or two to teach their parents about faith when the day is done.

Membership Development

Membership Development seeks to encourage, guide, and direct people who come to St. Philip's, to the many avenues available through which they may grow their faith. We seek to keep our people feeling connected, welcomed, and "at home" at St. Philips. Membership Development offers many ministry opportunities, especially for those whose gifts lie in the area of hospitality, and reaching out to others. We seek to make sure no one "falls through the cracks", and that everyone feels they are an "insider"!

If you would like to help welcome our guests and new members at St. Philips, Membership Development offers the following areas of ministry in which we welcome all who feel called to these rewarding opportunities.

Bakers: If you like to bake, we need freshly baked mini loaves of gift breads on an ongoing basis, which are delivered in gift pots to guests.

Gift Deliverers: This group takes the gift pots to the homes of guests, and just drops them off, to say "thanks for visiting". We especially need people who live outside Frisco, such as Lewisville, The Colony, Allen, Little Elm, Prosper, and other surrounding communities.

Fellowship Dinners: These are one time dinners held at the homes of members who host them, for newer members, as well as seasoned members who would like to expand their friendships, and get to know more great St. Philip's folks! We always need hosts who will hold a casual dinner at their home for 10-12 people, and we always want to hear from those who would like to attend a dinner!

Youth Ministry (6th - 12th grade)

Our youth and our Youth Ministry Programs are awesome! We offer a Youth Sunday School class during the 11:00 service in the Ministry Center that youth actually want to go to. The fresh discussion based format challenges ideas, digging deep into today's culture and helping youth discover how God meets them right where they are. Twice a month the youth gather after the 11:00 Sunday service for a more fast paced and fun, but just as challenging, gathering... with lunch included! There is way too much going on to describe it well here, you're just going to have to come and see for yourself. Youth also have yearly mission trips, cool fellowship stuff, and most excellent ministry opportunities to get involved in. One other thing, a weekly small group called The Walk keeps the discipleship goin' in the right direction.

Worship Ministries

Ministries in this area incorporate a multitude of gifts but common threads in each are faith and encouragement. Serving in this area means being an integral part of Sunday's worship experience.

Acolytes

Acolytes serve by lighting the candles, carrying the processional cross, and by performing other various duties. Training is provided for this ministry and children and youth are invited to participate.

- 972-335-8227

Altar Guild

The Altar Guild is a quiet ministry dedicated to helping the parish celebrate Eucharist. It involves the care of linens, serving vessels, flowers, banners and clergy vestments. While it is a quiet and prayerful ministry, it is also extremely rewarding and even fun. The camaraderie of the members is unique and special. If you feel like you would like to be a part of this ministry, please do call us.

- 972-668-1805
- 469-633-1496

Chalice Bearers

People in this ministry serve the clergy and congregation by offering the communion chalice to people who wish to receive it during the Eucharist. There is a training session required before serving in this ministry, and the Diocese gives licensing.

- 972-618-3826

Lay Eucharistic Ministers

People in this ministry serve the clergy and congregation by offering the blessed Host to people who wish to receive it during the Eucharist. These ministers also pray with people in the Communion line who do not wish to receive the bread and wine, but do wish to receive a blessing.

There is a training session required before serving in this ministry, and the Diocese gives licensing.

- 972-618-3826

Lay Readers

Lay Readers share the Bible with the congregation by providing inspired readings of scheduled Scriptures during services. People of any age, who can read and not be too shy in front of people, may serve in this ministry.

Music Ministry

Adult Worship Choir - Our Adult Choir prepares our hearts and voices for the 11:00 Sunday worship by gathering for a short devotional time and music practice each Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 in the Ministry Center. Anyone in high school and beyond is welcome to become part of this growing ministry. There are no "try outs" or auditions associated with joining the choir. We ask only that you can carry a tune, desire to worship, enjoy fellowship, and commit to making participation in this ministry a priority. Of course no one can make every practice every time, and we understand that. But, neither is choir a ministry which one can do serve well in and only attend occasionally.

Childrens Choirs - Our children's choirs uses the "Made for Praise" curriculum which incorporates joyful music, fun Bible learning, creative activities, group prayer, and committed adult guidance together all in one package! Children from Pre-K through 6th grade will enjoy an action filled environment in which to learn to worship and praise God. These choirs practice each Sunday from 4:00 to 5:00, the younger children in the education building and the older children in the sanctuary. Periodically our children's choirs lead the congregation for a portion of our worship at both services. Other events are scheduled through the year such as visiting Nursing Homes, Christmas Musicals and more. Older youth and adults are welcome to participate by partnering with a small group, preparing snacks, or overseeing an activity.

Adult Vocal Team - This small group of vocalists lead worship each Sunday during the 9:30 service. People who serve with this team must be comfortable holding a microphone and really "being in front" of our congregation. Because of the size of the group, good vocal quality is necessary. Members must practice on Sunday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00 or they must demonstrate the ability to sight-read music competently. A high level of commitment is also an important component to serving in this capacity.

Worship Instrumentalists - St. Philip's enjoys quite a number of talented instrumentalists within the congregation. From guitarists to violinists, from flutists to trumpeters, and just about everything in between, they're here. Some people volunteer their time and gifts almost every Sunday, while others join in during special seasons such as Advent, Christmas, and Easter and/or for special events. Attending practices is required prior to being part of a Worship service. We do not have the resources to 'teach' so to speak, so it is important that each instrumentalist to feel fairly comfortable with their level of ability. That being said, we do take the time during practices to encourage and assist our bravest and youngest musicians as they join with us to glorify God.

- 214-387-4700 ext. 116

Prayers of the People

During our worship services we use liturgy found in the Book of Common Prayer. Part of that liturgy is the "Prayers of the People". Lay People may lead these prayers during the services. You are invited to join this Prayer Ministry team.

- 972-731-0464

Sound System Crew

This group of dedicated people comes early to set up our sound system, stays through the service to provide quality sound balancing, and leaves late to make sure all the equipment is loaded back on the carts properly. Training is provided, but some experience with systems like this is helpful.

- 972-732-0842

Sunday Prayer Partners

If you have something that is troubling you, or something you want to celebrate with someone, we invite you to share it with one of our Sunday Prayer Partners during worship on Sunday mornings. They are ready to pray for you and to help you feel God's presence.

Ushers

Ushers serve on Sunday morning to assist in guiding the congregation through the worship service. Ushers help people find seats, gather the collection, direct people towards Communion and take a count of people at the service.

- 469-287-2598

Welcome Ministry

When someone serves in the Welcome Ministry they are called Greeters. This ministry is the first impression visitors will have of St. Philip's. Serving in this ministry includes welcoming people at the doors, providing helpful information, being a comforting presence to new visitors and, as people are leaving, thanking them for joining us. People can serve in this ministry as individuals, couples or even as families. Greeters also serve at the Guest Information Desk in the narthex on Sundays.

- 214-387-4700 ext. 124/125

Parking Lot Team

The Parking Lot Team serve as greeters in the parking lot. They welcome people with a wave as they drive in and out of the parking before and after church. They also answer guest's questions such as "whereis the nursery?" or "where do the teenagers go?"
