Places to Serve
St. Philip’s Ministries

Below, you’ll find information about different ministries here at St. Philips; what goes on in each ministry and the contact person for that ministry. Ministries are grouped in five categories: Administrative, Mission & Outreach, Fellowship & Caring, Teaching & Shepherding, and Worship.

This information is meant to encourage you to find a ministry in which to serve. Scripture tells us God has given all believers special gifts and that, when we use those gifts, the whole body of Christ is built up. Scripture is also clear that when we serve, we are blessed. Everyone is encouraged to serve in a ministry which will use their gifts in ways that are comfortable, and yet, perhaps in ways that are a bit challenging as well.

It is our hope that God will bless you as you seek and serve Him.

Ministry of Administration
Ministries under this heading all have to do with making sure that the ‘business” aspects of the church run smoothly. The gifts used in this ministry include developing, organizing, assisting, creative communications, and coordinating tasks and/or people.

Communications
How we communicate information about St. Philips, both within our church and our community, is extremely important. Computers are used in many aspects of this ministry. Graphic design, layout, website design and management, and press releases all start here. We love gifted photographers, videographers, writers and/or ‘field reporters’ who help us capture our life in pictures and video, as well as creative thinkers to design and produce promotional materials. We also welcome those interested and experienced in audio/video production and editing. If you are gifted and have experience in any of these areas, the Communications Ministry would love to hear from you.

Preparing boxes for Sunday morning teachers
Every week our Sunday School workers share their love of Jesus with the children of St. Philip’s through age-appropriate lessons. In order to allow them to focus their attention on the children, we provide a box that contains all the copies and materials needed for the lessons. We need some volunteers who have a couple of hours a week to devote to making copies and gathering supplies to prepare lesson boxes for use on Sunday morning.

Special Administration Projects
Several times a year, we have short-term projects that would involve various office skills such as copying, filing, database entry, etc. Additionally, there are a few projects that need some help once a month, or once a quarter, but need regular attention. If you are interested in serving on an “as needed” basis in this way, please contact our Parish Administrator.

Ministry of Missions and Outreach
These ministries use many of the same gifts as those in the ministry of Caring. However, Ministries of Missions and Outreach bear the special emphasis of bringing the Good News of Jesus Christ to our community and world. Often strong gifts of faith, mercy, leadership and shepherding shine as structured projects are completed.

Mission Trips
St. Philip’s currently sends mission teams to Belize, Houston (TX), India, New Orleans (LA), Nocona (TX), and Peru. Teams are formed approximately four months before a scheduled trip. Team preparation includes attendance at six Team Formation Meetings, inviting prayer and financial partners, and participating in some areas of “in country” readiness. Teams formulate plans based on current needs of the people we are going to serve. Some teams are more construction based, while others may focus on a more direct need, such as the Teacher Training we do in Belize, but all teams go to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. For more information about mission trips, please call our Missions and Outreach Director:
Mary Hendrix 214-387-4700 ext 114.

Outreach
In the spring of 2009 our church committed to help people in need by launching the Bright Zone Ministry. Practical programs are in motion as part of the Bright Zone Ministry with a mission to impact the heart of Frisco by providing volunteers and resources to support the needs of people who live, work and worship in the Bright Elementary attendance zone. Below, you’ll find some ways you can be involved in the Bright Zone. For local Outreach/Bright Zone information, please contact our Outreach Coordinator:

Band of Brothers /Circle of Sisters
The St. Philip’s men & women have partner with Bright Elementary to mentor at-risk boys & girls. Studies have shown that children with positive adult role models in their lives are more likely to succeed in school and life and less likely to get involved in drugs, alcohol, or criminal activity. The mentors spend time with their young friends each week building a positive relationship, making sure the kids know they have a friend.

Bright Readers
Studies show that the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children. The Bright Readers program was developed to build one-on-one reading mentor relationships with children at Bright Elementary. Our goal is to help students at Bright: Feel love and support from a weekly visit from a reading buddy; Build vocabulary and reading comprehension; Make reading fun; Improve literacy rates.

Partnership with Frisco Family Service Center
Throughout the year St. Philip’s partners with FFSC to promote, provide donations and volunteer support for such programs as Stock-a-Shelf, Apple Tree Back to School Program, Thanksgiving Boxes, Angel Tree and Summer Lunch Program. These programs are a great way to impact the heart of Frisco by providing much needed food, supplies and support to community members in need.

Partnership with Frisco Cares Clinic
Frisco Cares is a clinic, located in the heart of both Frisco and the Bright Zone, which provides free healthcare services to both children and adults within Frisco and its bordering communities. Established in 2005, to meet the growing needs of uninsured members within the Frisco community, the clinic has experienced tremendous growth, with a 68% increase in patients within their first year of operation. With the growing needs for medical services for uninsured children and adults, the clinic is now facing various challenges to support its rapidly increasing needs. The cost for medical supplies is increasing with the higher patient volume and the need for additional volunteers, both medical and non-medical, is required in order to expand their services. In addition, the need for new board members is critically needed to help the organization grow and move forward, making the clinic a vital part of the community’s resources for this population at risk. If you are interested in serving as a volunteer – both medical and non-medical, please contact:
Howard McKay howardmckay@sbcglobal.net

Bright Zone Jobs Ministry
If you are seeking employment or want to help those who are, the Jobs Ministry has a place for you! Join a community of other job seekers and those who have the skills, expertise and resources to make the search for employment a more positive and less anxious experience. Take part in free, semi-weekly support, advocacy and networking to help those who are out of work or underemployed and seeking a career change. Email jobs@stphilipsfrisco.org for more information.

Adult English as a Second Language and Adult Literacy Programs
In the greater Dallas area 60% of adults between the ages of nineteen and forty-four read below a high school level and 49% read at or below a fourth grade reading level, according to the Dallas County Adult Literacy Council. Illiterate adults and those who do not speak English do not have the full range of economic, employment, social and personal choices which are available to people with higher levels of literacy. The Bright Zone ministry is beginning a 10 week ESL program beginning Feb. 2. If you are interested in serving in this program as a teacher, planner, or child-care provider please contact:
Jennifer Atwood at 214-387-4700 ext. 136
jenniferatwood@stphilipsfrisco.org

Mission Possible Kids
St. Philip’s launched a new program that proves children can help change the world. “Mission Possible Kids empowers kids to change the world through missions. This is a hands-on program for children in kindergarten through 5th grade and their parents to serve side-by-side. Kids become “special agents” doing God’s work. They have “top secret” briefings, enjoy spy music, and periodically go on “top secret” off-site missions. Parents participate in the monthly programs along with their child. Monthly meetings are held on the 3rd Sunday of the month. Registration for new agents is $20 and includes your official MPKids t-shirt. No registration is required for parents, but t-shirts are available for $10. Scholarships are available.

Prison Ministry
The fall of 2007, St. Philip’s began its journey into Prison Ministry through Bill Glass Prison Ministry weekends. We are currently praying and seeking God’s guidance about how to expand this weekend ministry program into more of a discipleship ministry.

Grocery Store Rewards Program
Many of you are familiar with the reward card programs at our local grocery stores, but some of you may not know that the grocery stores will also make a contribution to the local charity of your choice, if you link your reward number to the number of that charity. St. Philip’s has set up numbers with Kroger’s and Tom Thumb. If you would like more information on how to link your reward card to St. Philip’s, please contact us.

Ministry of Teaching & Shepherding
Each of us is in the process of growing in our knowledge and faith of God. Yet, some of those amongst us also have been given the gifts of teaching, communication, and discipleship. Ministries in this area reach out to people of all ages, providing structure for learning, encouragement for learning, and the communicating of knowledge.

Teaching & Shepherding Adults

Adult Education
At St. Philip’s we believe that learning is an essential part of growing faith. We offer a variety of classes for adults. If you have the gift of teaching and believe you have something to offer our congregation in this area, please contact:
Beth Sarey 214-387-4700 ext 112

Teaching & Shepherding Children/Youth

Communion Discovery Class
All baptized Christians are welcome to receive Communion at St. Philip’s – even the little ones! To help children understand the sacrament more, there is a one day workshop each year that we call Communion Discovery Class. Typically it is held about a month before Easter. We need volunteers to gather the materials, make the copies, set up for the class, clean up afterwards, as well as people to be present during the class to help the kids with the activities.
Sheryl Holton 214-387-4700 ext 124
sherylholton@stphilipsfrisco.org

Confirmation Preparation
(6th grade) – During the sixth grade year, students participate in a class that will prepare them for making the decision to become a disciple of Christ. The Episcopal Church is founded on scripture, reason and tradition and this class explores the importance and relation of all three. Students develop their own plan for discipleship and accountability as they prepare to participate in the Sacrament of Confirmation when the Bishop visits in the spring.
Sheryl Holton 214-387-4700 ext 124
sherylholton@stphilipsfrisco.org

Kid’s Club
At both our services we offer an inspirational program for children 5 years old (as of Sept. 1) through 5th grade called Kid’s Club. With energetic teaching, Bible-focused learning, service projects, and personal attention this is exactly where the kids want to be. We are looking for people who love kids and who love Jesus to be part of the Sunday morning experience. Volunteers can lead large groups, small groups or simply be present to manage materials and technology. Volunteers must agree to a Background Check.
Sheryl Holton 214-387-4700 ext 124

Tiny Tots Club
We offer professional and loving care for our littlest (newborn to 4 years) members and guests. Parents receive a pager so that if they are needed they can be easily contacted. We are always looking for loving arms to help care for our smallest members. Volunteers must agree to a Background Check. If you feel called to serve with these little ones, please contact:

Youth Ministry
(6th-8th & 9th-12th) - Our youth ministry theme is "Rooted In Christ" based on Colossians 2:6-7, "So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness." Our vision is to see the "church" and the family work together to grow faith in our youth that impacts that world for Christ. To support this vision, we offer many different programs yet with the same vision in mind. We offer a Youth Sunday School class during the 11:00 service for youth to learn more about who God is, why we believe what we believe, and how can we can live out on faith. Twice a month (middle school 1st and 3rd Sundays and high school 2nd and 4th Sundays) the youth gather after the 11:00 service for a more fast paced and fun gathering, but just as challenging,…with lunch included! Youth also have local serving opportunities, mission trips, cool fellowship stuff, and excellent ministry opportunities in which to get involved. Adults are needed to mentor youth, to drive to events, to set up for youth group, and to hang out with the kids. There is a whole lot going on, so come and see for yourself!
Middle School – Greg Hendrix greghendrix@stphilipsfrisco.org
High School – Clay Lein claylein@stphilipsfrisco.org

Vacation Bible School
We believe Vacation Bible School is a once a year opportunity to share the love of Jesus with our neighbors and friends who might not be able to join us on Sunday mornings. From working directly with kids through drama, music, storytelling, crafts, and games to preparing things behind the scenes there really is something for everyone in the church. We need people who have just an hour to devote to making copies, people who have the time and passion to own the various events and everyone in between. This ministry is active from January to July, culminating in one fantastic week in August.

Worship Ministries
Ministries in this area incorporate a multitude of gifts but common threads in each are faith and encouragement. Serving in this area means being an integral part of Sunday’s worship experience.

Acolytes
Acolytes serve by lighting the candles, carrying the processional cross, and by performing other various duties. Training is provided for this ministry and children and youth are invited to participate. The team is always looking for new recruits. We find that youth in fifth grade and above are mature enough to handle this ministry; however we do have some younger children as well. Adult Coordinators are also needed for Sunday mornings. An Acolyte manual is available upon request.

Altar Guild
The Altar Guild is a quiet ministry dedicated to helping the parish celebrate Eucharist. It involves the care of linens, serving vessels, flowers, banners and clergy vestments. While it is a quiet and prayerful ministry, it is also extremely rewarding and even fun. The camaraderie of the members is unique and special. If you would like to be a part of this ministry, please do call us.
Jennifer Bergstrom 469-384-8107

Chalice Bearers
People in this ministry serve the clergy and congregation by offering the communion chalice to people who wish to receive it during the Eucharist. There is a training session required before serving in this ministry, and Chalice bearers must be confirmed in the Episcopal church. The diocese gives licensing.
JR DeLaurier 972-618-3826
jr.delaurier@verizon.net

Greeter Ministry
It is said that people always remember firsts and lasts and the Greeters of St. Philip’s serve as both the first and the last face that visitors see. Serving in this ministry means intentionally inviting people into our worship and community, providing helpful information, being a comforting presence to new visitors and, as people are leaving, thanking them for joining us. People can serve in this ministry as individuals, couples or even as families.
Linda Tucker 214-387-4700 x110
lindatucker@stphilipsfrisco.org

Lay Eucharistic Ministers
People in this ministry serve the clergy and congregation by offering the blessed Host to people who wish to receive it during the Eucharist. These ministers also pray for people at the altar who do not wish to receive the bread and wine, but do wish to receive a blessing. There is a training session required before serving in this ministry, and members must be confirmed in the Episcopal Church. The Diocese gives licensing.
JR DeLaurier 972-618-3826
jr.delaurier@verizon.net

Lay Readers
Lay Readers share the Bible with the congregation by providing inspired readings of scheduled Scriptures during services. There is no age requirement so if you read well and would feel comfortable reading in front of the congregation you are welcome to serve in this ministry.
Elizabeth Hamilton 972-377-2454
edandtheboys@sbcglobal.net

Music Ministry
Adult Worship Choir – Our Adult Choir prepares our hearts and voices for the 11:00 Sunday worship by gathering for a short devotional time and music practice each Sunday evening from 6:00 to 7:30. Singers 16 and older are welcome to become part of this growing ministry. There are no “try outs” or auditions associated with joining the choir. We ask only that you can carry a tune, desire to worship, enjoy fellowship, and commit to making participation in this ministry a priority. Of course no one can make every practice every time, and we understand that. But, neither is choir a ministry in which one can serve well, and only attend occasionally.
Ray Cox 940-395-9880

Praise Makers Children’s Choir

Angie Campbell 214-387-4700 ext. 116
angiecampbell@stphilipsfrisco.org

Adult Vocal Team
This small group of vocalists lead worship each Sunday during the 9:30 service. People who serve with this team must be comfortable holding a microphone and really “being in front” of our congregation. Because of the size of the group, good vocal quality is necessary. A high level of commitment is also an important component to serving in this capacity.
Ray Cox 940-395-9880
raycox@stphilipsfrisco.org

Worship Instrumentalists
St. Philip’s enjoys quite a number of talented instrumentalists within the congregation. From guitarists to violinists, from flutists to trumpeters, and just about everything in between, they’re here. Some people volunteer their time and gifts almost every Sunday, while others join in during special seasons such as Advent, Christmas, and Easter and/or for special events. Attending practices is required prior to being part of a Worship service. We do not have the resources to ‘teach’ so to speak, so it is important that each instrumentalist to feel fairly comfortable with their level of ability. That being said, we do take the time during practices to encourage and assist our bravest and youngest musicians as they join with us to glorify God.

Angiecampbell@stphilipsfrisco.org

Guest Information Desk
In the Narthex we have a designated Guest Center for our visitors. People who serve need a high level of comfort in talking with people they don't know, and helping them feel welcome and comfortable in a new place.
Carroll Nabors 214-387-4700 x119
Carrollnabors@stphilipsfrisco.org

Parking Lot Greeters
As people drive into the parking lot, seeing a friendly face, getting a wave and smile, and knowing there is help if needed is comforting. When serving they are in the parking lot keeping an eye open for folks who look like they may need assistance. Extra assistance taking umbrellas to guests in the parking lot on rainy days is required. Knowing where to direct guests for Sunday school, Nursery and Worship is part of the job, and wearing a smile is a must.
Steve Kassen 972-731-0464
sswkassen@tx.rr.com

Prayers of the People
During our worship services we use liturgy found in the Book of Common Prayer. Part of that liturgy is the ‘Prayers of the People’. Lay People may lead these prayers during the services. You are invited to join this Prayer Ministry team.
Kate Kassen 972-731-0464
kate.kassen@gmail.com

Service Coordinators
Service Coordinators function as the “oil that keeps things running smoothly” at any of our worship services. Each week a Service Coordinator is present to check in volunteers, find emergency substitutes, answer questions, solve problems, and communicate needs to Ministry Leaders. If all goes well, most folks won’t know anyone is doing this job, but without our Service Coordinators … we could never keep our level of excellent worship in place. Consider being part of this small and specialized team!
Wayne Wilson 972-587-9473
waynew@ewilsontech.com

Sound System Crew
This group of dedicated people comes early to set up our sound system and stays through the service to provide quality sound balancing and recording. Our brand new sound system requires extensive training to run and team members need to be committed to serving regularly.
Aadrian Anderson 972-612-3534

Sunday Prayer Partners
If you have something that is troubling you, or something you want to celebrate with someone, we invite you to share it with one of our Sunday Prayer Partners during worship on Sunday mornings. They are ready to pray for you and to help you feel God’s presence. If you feel called to this ministry of prayer please contact Lisa Stopfel.
Lisa Stopfel 469-742-0807

Ushers
The Usher Ministry is an important part of our Sunday Worship Service. Ushers ensure that people receive a service bulletin, can find a seat on a crowded day, and assist the congregation in any necessary way, but especially during the Offertory and Communion. Ushers also help us keep track of how many people worship here at St. Philip’s each week. There is always a need for people to join this ministry. Training will be provided
