Songs of Jesus – Angels’ Song
On Christmas Eve 1914, 5 months after the great war began, something wondrous happened. One brave soldier climbed out of his trench and crossed enemy lines, shaking hands and wishing the others “Merry Christmas”. Well-wishes and souvenirs were exchanged between the troops – there were even soccer matches between the English and German soldiers.
This ceasefire didn’t last, but it seemed appropriate – Christmas and peace just belong together. But as we fast-forward to 2020, the trenches of our cultural and political wars are being dug deeper and deeper, and the artillery thunders overhead. Why does peace seem so brittle – so fragile – these days?
