Called to Serve

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve…
Mark 10:45

Serve on Sundays

Sunday mornings go smoothly thanks to teams of volunteers. There are a variety of roles, responsibilities, and shifts to match any schedule.

Serve in Worship

  • Ushers support the flow of people before, during, and after worship by handing out bulletins, helping guests find a seat, directing people to the altar rail during communion. They also pass the collection plates during the offering.

  • Readers provide their voices to read aloud the Scriptures for the day and the Prayers of the People.

  • Assist the celebrant during communion; hold the Gospel book; assist during the Gospel procession

  • Torch Bearers carry torches during the processional, processional of the Gospel, and recessionals. Crucifers lead the processional and recessional; lead Gospel processional and assist the celebrant during the Great Thanksgiving (communion).

  • Chalice bearers serve the wine during communion.

  • The Altar Guild prepares the altar for worship, cleans between services, resets the elements, and cares for the vestments, vessels, and altar linens.

  • These volunteers prepare floral arrangements for the altar.

  • Prayer partners individually support parishioners to lift up their concerns and cover them in prayer.

  • The A/V team delivers sound throughout the Sanctuary, runs slides and video to monitors, runs livestream feed for online worshippers, and maintains equipment.

Serve in Welcome Ministry

  • Greeters provide a warm welcome to bring guests in to worship. This is a great entry-level position for new volunteers with a cheerful smile. Serve at the front doors or at the Welcome Center.

  • Play an important hospitality and safety role as parishioners and guests enter the campus.

  • Works behind the scenes to ensure all necessary positions are filled for each service, oversees everyone serving, and works closely with the SERT team.

  • This vital team is dedicated to the safety of parishioners, guests, and staff by monitoring activity on our campus during services and events, and responding to emergencies, as needed.

No experience is needed but a background check and training is required to join the team.

Serve Around Campus

Take on a role that keeps the campus beautiful, safe, and running smoothly.

  • Join the St. Philip’s Campus Crew once a week. As needs for facilities grow, a few men and women are needed to help with odd jobs around campus on Thursday mornings. This is a wonderful way to apply your practical talents to bless to the church.

  • Located in the Study of St. Philip’s Hall, our library collection has a wealth of Christian books, Bible studies, and a wide variety of theological resources - all available to borrow at no cost! The Volunteer Librarian organizes and categorizes these resources, returns borrowed materials, and maintains the bookshelf area.
